I have 2- 5ton Water Furnace units that have the de-superheaters on them. They put the water into a pre heat tank in front of the water heater. The problem is when we go away and are not using hot water it gets really hot and eventually cooks the water out. Will it damage the geo units if I disconnect power to the pumps and shut off the water supply to them when we are gone? Thank You
No, it will not. The units can be run with or without the desuperheaters running. Desuperheaters are offered as an option, not a requirement that has to be installed.
From where is the water "cooking out"? There should be a sensor that shuts off the DSH's when temp gets to a "maximum" temp. On my Climatemaster that temp is adjustable, 125*F or 150*F. Chris
It cooks out of the pre heat tank. I was not sure whether I was doing more harm than good since the water from the de super was not being used.
I'm having trouble with this. Is water being pushed out the temp/pressure relief valve? I would not close water valves when the DSH is turned off.
I am not really sure. In spring when we return there is a lot of water gone from the pre heat tank but no leaks. Faucets are left open when water is drained. It must get hot enough to push it into the water heater. It often gets the water above 120º even when we are there to use it.
Ok, you didn't mention that you drain the water system The DSH's need to be part of your winterizing procedures. Turning them off at least, I am not sure if anything else needs to be done.
I drain the water system only back to the basement. So the storage tank and water heater are still both full. I am going to put switches on the pumps so I can easily shut them off.
