I wonder if you do a diy install, if you still qualify for the credit. Wonder what proof they would want if you happen to get an audit.
I did a DIY replacement of a 6 yr old unit. I just saved the receipts from purchase and labor. I paid a guy to help make the connections. That was 5 yrs ago. I don't remember the exact tax form placement but you definitely qualify.
