Hello, I have been an lurker on this site for some time and from the advice I have gathered here (and some high utility bills) I have decided go with a geothermal heat pump. I am having a 5 ton Waterfurnace Envision split installed in an open loop configuration. I currently have a 1/2 hp submersible well pump with a 25 gallon X-trol pressure tank. The pressure tank is housed in a faux rock enclosure about 25 feet from my house. I called my local well drilling company and he said I should go with a constant pressure submersible well pump and use my existing 25 gallon pressure tank. The question I have concerns the pressure tank size. Would there be a substantial efficiency penalty for having a 25 gallon pressure tank. In between call times this 25 gallons will be sitting outside losing temperature to the air. If I used a smaller pressure tank, it would keep more of the water in the ground, thus keeping that water warmer. Could someone with experience help me with this question? I am new to geothermal and don't have much knowlege of the systems associated with them. Your help with pressure tank placement would be greatly appreciated. Also, he uses Webtrol constant pressure submersible well pumps. Is this brand of good quality/reliability? Thanks, Chad
Hi and welcome, Your 5 ton system is going to consume as litle as 10gpm or as much as 15 gpm. Sooo your air adjusted storage will be consumed in about 1.5 to 2 minutes of initial operation of your unit. No you will not take a penalty. I am not familiar with that brand of controller, but if that is what the local guy likes to install and is going to stand behind it for service and warranty it is the best unit for you. Eric
