I took a call yesterday from a young man doing a survey for NREL. He was asking questions like:

what is the average cost of a heat pump
what is the average cost of a retrofit
what is the average cost of a new construction
what is the average cost of labor on a retrofit
what is the average cost of labor on a new construction
what is the average cost of a horizontal ground loop
what is the average cost of a vertical ground loop
how much more does it cost to install 2 stage than a 1 stage heat pump
what is the labor cost to install a ground loop

I was quite put out about the questions and told the young man so.

I can see what is going to happen here, NREL will take the data and publish the average cost of a geo system, which will have not be meaningful in any way.

Any way we can stop the madness?

    I do not have either.

What I know I share here with most, but I do it with my nose. I think people looking for averages flunked math and do not get mean data.

We know what we know the hard way, we paid for our knowledge. I do not want to know how you handled the call, but I hope you did not give away any knowledge.

We are hot, (those of us the really know how to design geothermal systems) and the "they" want us to give up our paid schooling so the "they" can do their thing for however. The information super highway.

I would have put up the bridge is closed for repairs sign, and then given the info to anyone I know and like here.

Hope this helps, like when you have helped me.

    Warm regards,

    Mark
