My old unit died and had a new unit installed. Different brand than what I had before. The installer has it set for the aux heat not kick in, only if I go to the emergency heat setting. I was told before, at least with my old geo that it isn't a good idea to disable the aux. If the unit is calling for aux heat, it means it can't keep up without it. Is this true? Also, the closed loop has 2 pumps, one on the inlet and one going out. Each pump has a switch for speeds, low, med, hi. Both are set to med. I didn't get a explanation on what the settings are for or if they would ever need to be changed. What is the reason for different speeds? My old unit just had one pump on the loop.
How smart is your thermostat? Disabling the aux heat while you are in the home is a strategy to combat a thermostats need to make up temp swings quickly by adding aux heat to close the gap. If you can tell your thermostat to be patient closing those gaps, or better yet set your temp and leave it alone is a good strategy. Did your old system rely on aux heat? Is your new system the same tonnage as your old system? Pump speeds are based on gpm flow rates for your units. I would hazard a guess that your multi pump, multi speed flow center is oversized as a 1 size fits all solution. Hope this helps. Eric
Thanks for the input, My old unit was 2.5 ton and the new is 3. The old did rely on the aux. It seemed to kick in more than I thought it should. It was also a single stage compressor where the new is multi. It is a communicating thermostat. It does have the ability to put different programs in it and keep the aux from coming on when ramping the heat up. I tend to set the temp and leave it so I probably wont use that function. I do have a wood/coal stove that I used to rely on when it got real cold and the aux would kick in. I'm low on wood this year, hoping to rely on the new unit more.
I would say that a 2 pump variable speed flow center is gross overkill for your system. Your 3 ton system requires 9gpm flow rate. The unknown value is your feet of head. Do you have the make and model of the pump from your old set up? If you do we could reverse engineer a solution that would lower pump cost. Eric
The Gummint is broke, has been for years. Sin tax is very high, as is receipt tax for business. Other than that life here is good. Economy is thriving. Eric
