Just to put the slinky argument to rest, I have listed below the links to some our our systems running with slinkies.
They all have a graph showing the EWT over the season, and they are all in the low 30s F at the end of the heating season, and in the upper 60s to lower 70F in the peak at the end of the summer, plus minus a few degrees. Could not ask for a better performance. The proof continues to be in the data.

  2. What do you use to monitor your performance?

I may not get by here often, but at least the old "this way is best" conversation is still kicking. When asked I tell folks the best loop system is the one the best installer in their area uses. They all work if long and deep enough.

In the above cases we used the WELSERVER (welserver.com).

We now use the symphony system from Waterfurnace which not only monitors the systems but also gives us remote control capability to change the settings.

That is a fact surprisingly few people understand. They all work well if you design them to do so.

  6. how dose it work? just monitors the electricity usage or dose it monitor the ewt lwt outside temp ect?

As you can see on the graphs, measure EWT, LWT, both over the whole year and for the last 24 hours, outside temps, air temps entering and exiting the unit, power consumption, etc.

You can choose what you like to know, and how to display it.....

  9. How do you set it up? Or do you just hire it done or buy a kit or what?

  11. Well I think that is out of the question I spent 200$ on 6 barley used heat pumps 500+/- for a monitoring system is kind of out of the question right now. Thanks anyway, a friend just replaced his meter box for a larger one, and I just bought a meter off ebay. at least i'll know the kwh used. I'll add a thermometer to the loop manifold and somewhat log the ewt and lwt from time to time.
Is their a more affordable/ more precise monitoring method you know of doc? like a pi3 and a arduino with some temp probes?

If there would be something cheaper and better out there, I would use it.
The Welserver provides a great bang for the buck. It is not only the hardware you pay for, but also the web based software to display the whole thing.
With the introduction of the Symphony by Waterfurnace with its 2 way communication the Welserver has become of lesser value, since it is a read only system (1 way communication), but it still has the best display options and can be publicly displayed.
