We're mostly done with this project now; just the electrical inspection left to do. System is working well (22f out and 68 and cosy inside); costs in the $3-4 per day range (22-30kwh); including hot water demands). Pretty pleased overall, except for the time taken (4 months).

I'd like to thank everyone that replied to my questions, especially the pros. I appreciate your time, its been very valuable.

    Happy New Year All!

It's good to hear that you're happy with the completed project. Out of curiosity, did you ever get the heat strip installed? Just wondering about the guarantee that your contractor made about using more than 5% backup heat (is the heat strip your backup, or do you have something else?).

    Hi Steve,

We have same geo contractor and I have problem with my Unit is not working fine if temperature is single digit. Did you install your auxiliary heating by your self or you hire someone.

    thanks

    Eric,

I've started a separate conversation about this.

we've lived with the geothermal system for a while now, and after the intial teething problems described, we are very pleased with the unit. The house is comfortable and have been enjoying the 'slow and steady' approach of having a constant 67 in the house during the winter and 77 in the summer.
The 3ton system does well, with the aux heat only coming on periodically during those days where its silly cold (below 15F) to help out.
The only downer these days is that the collapse in the oil price has meant that the cost savings originally projected have not quite panned out, but otherwise I strongly recommend geothermal to anyone who asks, despite the price tag.

Lastly I'd like to thank those pros who gave feedback to all the questions. The information you provide enables readers of this forum to be informed and educated consumers (with the caveat that a little bit of knowledge can be dangerous too!)

    15F we consider a heatwave:)

Don't worry about the short term oil prices, you'll be doing well in the long run.

Almost a year later and still very pleased with the installation. System works well and the advice of 'slow and steady' for the settings works like a charm.
However, my contractor has now disappeared (doesn't return calls/emails), website has disappeared etc. The system is due its 2nd service/checkup which was supposed to be part of the contract but this hasn't happened. I'm based in Westchester, NY; wondering if anyone here had a contractor they could recommend? I have a bosch unit installed.
